The harsh truth is that self-love is like a muscle that you just have to keep on exercising. Odd as it may sound, meeting what’s unfolding in your life with compassion and kindness is a choice. You could just as easily choose not to meet it at all or meet it with a self-criticizing, self-belittling, never-self-forgiving attitude. It is primarily a choice—one that requires attention, focus, and work.
But there’s another kind of embracing love that requires no decision. It is immediate and innate, effortless and always present. This love is you. It is your presence, your existence, your true nature. This presence that you are does not say: “First be perfect and then I’ll let you exist!” Nope, the unconditional love that you are knows no ban, no boundary, no limit.
Your loving presence already welcomes you into life with all your thoughts and all your emotions and all your physical sensations, with everything labeled negative and everything labeled positive, with all your stories and wants, plans and dreams. You are always and already accepted into this present moment, just as you are. Now what you do with it, that’s wholly up to you.
